An off-duty police officer in Maryland did not hesitate when a distressed neighbor knocked on his door asking for help.
Corporal Mujahid Ramzziddin, a former Marine and Medal of Valor winner, was fatally shot Wednesday morning when he "stepped in to protect a woman threatened in a domestic situation," according to Prince George's County Police Department.
The gunman was identified as 37-year-old Glenn Tydell of Brandywine. He was shot and killed during a confrontation with police.
Ramzziddin was a father of four and a husband. He had been assigned to the Special Operations Division, Harbor Unit and served as a police officer in Prince George's County for 14 years.
"He lived a consequential life and suffered a consequential death," Police Chief Hank Stawinski said. "But he saved her life by giving his own."
Prince George's County state's attorney Angela Alsobrooks slammed the suspect as a "gutless coward" who "took the life of a very important member of our community."
Stawinski said the shooter had a record of domestic incidents spanning several different counties.
Ramzziddin "immediately responded to that plea for help and shortly thereafter found himself in a confrontation with a man armed with a shot gun," the chief continued.

Stawinski noted the investigation is ongoing, but said based on previous offenses the suspect should not have been legally able to obtain a firearm.
There was a large police presence near Chadds Ford Drive in Brandywine in the hours after the violent incident and a witness told
WJLA he heard up to 20 gunshots.
"It's another sad day in America," Stawinski lamented.
Authorities requested “patience and respect” while they continued their investigation into the deadly confrontation, adding “our sole focus is the family.”

The area remained closed to traffic into the afternoon. Authorities said MD-210 and Old Fort Road in Fort Washington would be shut down in both directions, likely into the evening.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives tweeted special agents from its Hyattsville field office were on the scene to assist the Prince George’s county police department.
Prince William County Police department also offered their support to their nearby colleagues.
"Our deepest condolences to the family, friends and community of Prince George's County police department," officers said in a statement to Twitter. "Our hearts and prayers are with you all."
