Soaring maize price in Nigeria defies two year trend

The price of maize, a staple food in Nigeria, has soared in the country, amid increase in the global prices of the commodity and other grains, an outlook review by Novus Agro Nig. Limited, an agro commodity price tracker, has revealed.

There is over 83 per cent price increase, as a metric ton of maize now sells for N183,130 in Lagos, as against N100, 000 sold last year.

The outlook, made available to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Lagos, showed that the soaring price of maize defied a two-year market trend since January 2016.

The outlook revealed that the price increase followed the rise in the Naira exchange rate to the dollar, from N225 in December 2015 to N305 in mid-January 2016.

Price per mega ton of the commodity rose from between N45,000 and N50,000 in October 2015 to N65,000 in January 2016.

“There is a global rise in maize prices, with spikes in Southern Africa, due to drought in 2015, with current maize contracts for March delivery in South Africa hitting $315 in this week’s trading,” the review said.

NAN reports that maize prices traditionally start trending downwards from mid-October and get to their lowest prices by January and February, as new maize harvests are brought into the market.

“Maize prices fluctuate over the course of the year primarily due to the rain-fed nature of Nigerian agriculture and consequent availability of maize in the market place,” the review said.

“This has seen Nigerian maize for the first time in many years cheaper than imported maize, leading to lower import prospects.”

With only about 200,000 metric tonnes of maize imported annually, as against the 7.5 million tons produced locally, the review blamed the increased prices on macro-economic uncertainties, spot-buying at the farm gate by poultry farmers and insurgency in the North-eastern part of the country.

Although effects of the insurgency were apparent, particularly in Adamawa State, the outlook showed that the effects could only be largely speculative, as prices in neighbouring Taraba and Gombe, remained stable.

Farmers said the continued devastation by army worms of maize crop in Nigeria was a major cause of the over 83 per cent price increase.

The outlook further showed that the increase has led to anxiety by traders about possible inflationary effects on the wider economy

A family has been thrown into sorrow after their 14-year-old daughter, Obiamaka Orakwue, was raped to death in her parents' home in the Abule Ado area of Lagos State, on July 10, 2017.

A family friend, Cynthia Okonkwo Akuoma, who posted the sad news on her Facebook page said the deceased was a Junior Secondary School [JSS 3] student, hailed from Obosi in Anambra State.

According to Akuoma, the grieving mother of the deceased gave an account of the gruesome act that has torn the family apart.

A young man living with disability was recently arraigned for falsely obtaining N200,000 from someone in Kaduna state.

NAIJ.com gathered that the man identified as Gabriel Chimezie, who operated under the alias Amadu Isah, was arraigned for defrauding someone of N200,000.

Despite being in a wheelchair, Chimezie was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) today, July 27,bun 2017, at the Kaduna state High court.

He was charged with three counts of obtaining by false pretence.

A vehicle conveying the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Ahmed Makarfi, was earlier today, involved in a multiple collision with other vehicles along Abuja-Kaduna Highway, Premium Times reports.
Reacting to the development, spokesperson of the party, Dayo Adeyeye said in a statement that Mr. Makarfi “and all other passengers in his vehicle came out unhurt.”

“This is to allay the fears of our Party members, teeming supporters and well wishers who heard of the accident and have been making frantic calls; as well as those who may stumble on half-baked information,” Mr. Adeyeye said.

How man was allegedly brutalized for confronting Nigerian governor who delayed their flight

 Nigerian man on Instagram, @vanladi, has cried out over the way he was allegedly beaten up for speaking up after confronting a Nigerian governor.

According to him, his flight from Jalingo to Abuja was delayed for 6 hours because the goveror of the state was to join them on the trip. The airline was said to have told them they would be delayed for 30 minutes but it took six hour before they embarked on the journey.

When the governor showed up, the young man allegedly walked to the governor and said:

"Sir, I am a law abiding and tax paying citizen just like the other people on the plane whom you delayed from 1pm till now and we were not given the courtesy of an apology from the airline or from your office. This isn't fair to us sir and I just thought I express my grievance."

"I booked an @overland flight from jalingo to Abuja for 1pm today and when we all got to the airport we were told there was gonna be a 30mins delay which we agreed to. We waited for 2 hours without any information from the airline or the airport authorities.

"After 2 hours, I and my colleagues got so hungry that we had to look for food at the closest location to the airport which is the Nysc camp mammy market all because the airport is at a remote location far away from the town.

Finally at 7pm we were called to board only for us to be delayed in the plane further,few mins later the Governor of the state walks into the plane without the courtesy to apologize for keeping us from 1pm to 7pm(6 good hours).

"I then walk up to him and explain "sir I am a law abiding and tax paying citizen just like the other people on the plane whom u delayed from 1pm till now and we were not given the courtesy of an apology from the airline or from your office. This isn't fair to us sir and I just tot I express my griviance" (wetin I talk bad?).

"Before I knew it his aides rushed into the plane and started raining abuses on me and slapping me...dragged me out of the plane that who gave me the right to talk to "their governor" that he has the right to keep all of us till tomao if he wants to. I just looked with shock....a flight that I paid for with my hard earned money fah! Well he later called them to order and told them he wanted to see me. He explained he didn't know he kept us and I replied that his office knew and it was their job to offer apology and refreshment to us.

"Later I found out even the hostess and pilot had to go source for food when hunger started dealing with them. The painful part is that passangers in the airport that were complaining and shouting to the airline operatives while we waited for the flight kept mute and others joined the aides in berating me for talking to "their Governor".

"I just wonder where this nation is headed when public servants elected by the people to serve us become mini gods over the same electorate. Was I wrong with my action?"

Buhari eager to return to Nigeria – Governor Ortom speaks after London trip

The Benue state governor Samuel Ortom on Thursday, July 27, said President Muhammadu Buhari is eager to return to Nigeria.

Ortom said Buhari is eager to return once he completes his medical treatment in London.

He also said that the president is showing 'great' improvement in his health which he says is an indication that God is answering the prayers of millions of Nigerians over Buhari's condition.

In a statement signed by his chief press secretary, Terver Akase, said President Buhari was in high spirits during the Nigerian Governor's Forum visit to him at the Abuja House in London.

He further added that the president cracked jokes with the governors who visited.

“God has answered our prayers. It is one thing to pray and it is another for God to answer; so let us continue to pray. Our God is God of the beginning and the end. As He is healing Mr President, it is our duty to pray so that God will consummate the healing so that our President can come back.

“He is eager to return and is very grateful to Nigerians for praying for him and he wishes us well," Ortom

Ortom added that the president showed concern over the current security situation in Benue state and how he (the governor) was addressing them.

Embattled Trump replaces chief of staff

US President Donald Trump ousted his beleaguered chief of staff Reince Priebus on Friday, replacing him with Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly after vicious White House infighting spilled into the open. Only hours after a humiliating defeat on health care reforms had underlined his tenuous control over his party in Congress, Trump announced a second shakeup of his inner circle in barely a week. White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Kelly would start in his new post Monday. Priebus has been under fire for weeks, seeing one White House ally after another resign or leave, culminating in the departure of press secretary Sean Spicer a week ago. His exit appeared inevitable when Trump did not intervene as his new communications director Anthony Scaramucci publicly described Priebus as a “paranoid schizophrenic” in a foul-mouthed tirade that also saw him savage another top Trump aide. Trump announced the switch on Twitter after a trip to New York, on which he was accompanied by both Priebus and Scaramucci. TRUMP “I am pleased to inform you that I have just named General/Secretary John F Kelly as White House Chief of Staff,” Trump said. “He is a Great American… and a Great Leader. John has also done a spectacular job at Homeland Security. He has been a true star of my Administration.” Kelly’s Department of Homeland Security is responsible for enforcing border security and has taken a tough line on immigrants inside the United States. The move likely signals a greater focus on law and order issues and will put further strain on relations between Trump and the Republican establishment. Both Priebus and Spicer were part of the Republican National Committee, and the bridge that linked the party to Trump. The announcement of Priebus’s departure came only after three Republican senators defied White House pressure to vote against health care reforms, which experts predicted would have left millions more Americans without coverage. The party rebellion — led by Senators Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and John McCain — is a deeply ominous sign for Trump, whose political brand is defined by his dealmaking acumen and a take-no-prisoners approach to politics. For months, Trump has kept skeptical Republicans in line with an implicit threat that he would turn his diehard supporters against them. Republican lawmakers had privately worried that even an angry tweet against them could spell disaster at the next election. But there are growing signs those threats are losing potency, when Republicans not only killed efforts to dismantle Obamacare, but joined Democrats in supporting a new sanctions regime against Russia. – To veto or not to veto? – The sanctions bill — which also includes measures targeting North Korea and Iran — is designed to restrict Trump’s ability to lift punitive measures on Moscow. Trump now faces a choice between swallowing a bill he deeply opposed and refusing to do so — a move that would intensify suspicions about his attitude to Russia and likely bring a humiliating veto override. A source confirmed that the bill had now been passed to the president. Trump’s administration and his presidential campaign are under investigation by a special prosecutor and several Congressional committees over whether they colluded with Moscow to tilt the 2016 presidential election. The new sanctions appear to have thwarted Trump’s efforts to build better relations with Russia. Russia’s foreign ministry announced countermeasures, ordering Washington to reduce its diplomatic staff and seizing two US facilities. Moscow ordered the US to reduce its diplomatic presence in Russia to 455 diplomats and staff and also barred it from using a Moscow summer house and storage facility. Moscow complained that the “new sanctions bill showed with all clarity that relations with Russia have fallen hostage to the domestic political struggle in the US.” – Infighting – The grim news from Congress would have worsened the mood of Trump after an outburst from Scaramucci had shone a harsh spotlight on the divisions within his administration. In an eye-watering exchange with a New Yorker reporter published late Thursday, Scaramucci described Priebus as a “paranoid schizophrenic” and chief White House strategist Steve Bannon as trying to build his own brand off Trump. Scaramucci, a millionaire New York financier, arrived at the White House vowing to serve Trump’s interest and right a badly faltering administration. He did not apologize for the tirade, but said he would try to clean up his language in the future. “I sometimes use colorful language. I will refrain in this arena but not give up the passionate fight for @realDonaldTrump’s agenda,” he tweeted.

Sports ministry bows to pressure, inaugurates federations

Abuja – The Federal Ministry of Youthd and Sports on Thursday announced that it would inaugurate boards of National Sports Federations on Friday at the Abuja National Stadium. Solomon Dalung; President, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Mr. Amaju Pinnick and his Vice, Mr. Seyi Akinwunmi during the inspection visit to the National Stadium, Surulere, on Wednesday. Nneka Ikem-Anibeze, the Special Assistant on Media to Solomon Dalung, the Minister of Youths and Sports, said in a statement that elections into Rugby and Gymnastics were ongoing. She said that the Arbitration and Harmonization Committee comprising the Nigeria Olympic Committee and the Ministry took some critical decisions which necessitated the delay of the by-elections. She said some major decisions taken by the committee included upholding the elections in the Athletics Federation of Nigeria and the Weightlifting Federation. Ikem-Anibeze said the committee upheld the election of Ibrahim Gusau as President of the Athletic Federation of Nigeria. “His challenger Christy Asonze was dismissed because she had served five years ban for drug use by WADA and was not eligible to contest as stipulated in the guidelines. She also said that the committee returned Solomon Ogba as Sponsor/ Ex-officio of AFN as approved by the federation. Ikem-Anibeze said while the case of Hamid Adio was dismissed. Rosa Collins and Brown Ebewele were earlier reinstated as representatives of NAWIS and Technical representatives. She said that the case of Haruna Bako and Charles Yayock of the North west Zone were both dismissed for lack of merit. For Traditional Sports, the election of Usman Musa as the duly elected President was upheld and not Mohammed Garba Lere. “The Committee was furnished with fresh pictorial evidence and interviews with those at the election venue proving that Musa Usman won the election and he was so declared winner. “The Federation is, however, mandated to appoint an international representative as the committee affirmed the reversal of Mohammed Abdullahi who is the current President of Archery ” she said. For Rugby, she said the petitioner, Ntiense Williams, presented a historic analysis of Rugby activities in Nigeria and called on the ministry to use the guidelines used by other federations. She stressed that election into Rugby was ongoing. For Weightlifting, she said election of Yahaya Mohammed as President was upheld as well as that of the Vice President Emeka Nwank. “The Presidential election in Judo was upheld. The committee ruled that by-election in the South west should take place. “Petition by Mohammed Sule of the cycling federation was dismissed as he failed to pay Appeals processing fees within 48 hours of making his appeal. “There will be no fresh elections in Taekwondo as EX-officio and philanthropist representative George Ashiru was reinstated as a board member. For Table Tennis, she said Kayode Ayodele was also reinstated as Athletes’ representative. The Harmonization Committee ordered fresh elections in Gymnastics as the electoral committee members petitioned that the conduct of the previous elections wad held under duress. “New electoral committee members will be appointed for the election. She said all other zonal by-elections that were to be concluded were also ongoing at the stadium. The ministry had earlier postponed some of the by-elections, leading to protests by delegates at the ministry and the National Assembly. (NAN)

The governors of 19 northern states said, yesterday, that the region was not opposed to the restructuring of the country, contrary to widely held views by some persons and groups. In an address at a meeting of the 19 northern states governors and traditional rulers in Kaduna, Chairman of the Northern States Governors Forum and Governor of Borno State, Ibrahim Shettima, said any restructuring should be done  within acceptable criteria and must be fair to all component parts of the country. Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State, at the meeting between the Northern Governors and Traditional Rulers in Kaduna State on Thursday He said: “It is also my expectation that at the end of this meeting today (yesterday) and, God willing, tomorrow’s (today) meeting of the governors, the forum and our esteemed royal fathers will adopt a consensus position on restructuring of the country that will be reflective of the general overall interest of the people of Northern Nigeria and which will attract popular acceptance. “It is of vital importance to arrive at such consensus position because it is crucial to dispel the erroneous impression created and disseminated by certain interests in this country that the North is opposed to restructuring. “Secondly, it is important to do so not only to accommodate the mainstream of Northern public opinion, our primary constituency, but to also counter the specific versions of restructuring, which generally seek to place the North in a position of strategic political and economic disadvantage, but portrayed as the only versions that can work for the nation. “Without pre-empting the outcome of our interactions over the next two days, however, permit me Your Excellencies and Your Royal Highnesses, to embark on a short reflection on the matter before hand. Agreed that being citizens of a democratic country, Nigerians are entitled to exercise their constitutionally guaranteed freedom of speech and association, and the clamour for the restructuring of the country falls within the purview of these freedoms. However, the exercise of such rights outside the confines of responsibility is not acceptable

Since the release of his debut album N’abania in 2005, a Nigerian singer Chinedu Izuchukwu Okoli, popularly known as Flavour N’abania, and his journey to fame have been nothing but remarkable.

In just over a decade of his music career, Flavour has released five solid albums with multiple awards to his name.

How did it all start for Flavour?

As the first son of his father, a lot of responsibilities rested on the shoulder of the 33-year-old Nigerian artiste, but music has always been his passion.

This is perhaps why he is one of the few artistes to have studied music on scholarship, all thanks to the pastor of his church and Chris I Ordor, the CEO of SoundCity Communications.

Flavour began his music career at the young age of 13 after he ran away from home due to his parents' disapproval of a career in music.

He started playing the drums for his church choir in Enugu. The resident pastor at his church introduced him to a friend, Chris I Ordor, the CEO of SoundCity Communications, who had just started a musical company aimed at training young musicians.

In 1996, Flavour was invited to join the company on an educational scholarship to study music.

At the age of 19, Flavour emerged unto Nigeria’s musical scene as a drummer and pianist for a local Enugu band. He then moved on to b bygrooming his singing talent as he regularly performed at local bars. Flavour is presently one of Nigeria's biggest stars.
